It started storming around 8 or 9 pm last night, and there was lots of thunder and lightning, but little rain, fortunately. My tent was still wet this morning. I decided to push 11 miles today to Erwin and get there a day early rather than sit at camp from noon until dark and get into town the next morning.

It was a pretty cruisey hike today after climbing out from the road. Bo and I were averaging around 3 mph and were essentially running down the mountain. It was a little scary, considering all the weight that I had on my back. We descended into Erwin, and we could see the Nolichucky River down below. There was a bunny in a ferris wheel in one of the trees as we walked down.

We arrived at Uncle Johnny’s around noon and checked in. They rebuilt the place after the flooding from Helene. I got a private room and got Bo settled before going and showering. They had fairy lights in the bathroom/shower area, and it was a lovely vibe. I found loaner clothes that fit perfectly, which is crazy because they are blue jeans. I noticed after putting the jeans on that I have lost some weight.

I put my laundry in the wash and saw “Optimist” and went and chatted with him for a bit, I haven’t seen him since Franklin, NC. “Thirsty Boy” joined us, and then I saw “Quill” and Dude who are also staying here. “Optimist” and “Thirsty Boy” and I decided to bike into town to get some food and resupply. All the bikes were one speed and cruiser style. Helene had wiped out some of the roads and bike paths, so we ended up on the interstate in order to get to the restaurant. I’m sure we were a sight to see riding along on the shoulder with our arms outstretched in front of us like we were riding a Harley! We made it in one piece.

Had a great reuben sandwich and a beer from the restaurant. Then we biked over to the grocery store to resupply, and I got some blueberries and a pint of ice cream. We decided not to take the interstate back to the hostel, and it was much more peaceful. Once back at the hostel, I rinsed off and ate my snacks in the room with Bo and made a few phone calls.
